Overview

Some wastewater simply refuses to settle. Emulsified oils, fine solids, colloids — the contaminants that gravity settling struggles to remove. Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) was built for exactly these streams: a highly efficient physical-chemical process that uses microscopic air bubbles to lift suspended solids, fats, oils, grease, and colloidal materials out of industrial wastewater. The result is rapid clarification and a high-quality effluent — an essential solution for complex wastewaters that defy conventional treatment.

How It Works

The principle is elegant. A portion of the treated effluent — or clean water — is supersaturated with air under pressure. This pressurized stream is then injected into the main influent flow inside the contact chamber, where atmospheric pressure causes the dissolved air to come out of solution in an instant, forming millions of fine micro-bubbles. The bubbles attach to suspended particles, drastically reducing their density, and buoy them rapidly to the surface. A skimmer continuously removes the floated sludge layer, while clarified water exits from the bottom of the unit.

Key Advantages

Removes what gravity can't. Exceptionally effective at separating low-density solids, fine particles, oils, grease, and colloidal substances that settle poorly — or not at all.

Fast separation, high throughput. Significantly faster than conventional sedimentation, with higher surface loading rates — in a much smaller footprint.

Compact, modular, economical. The high-rate process shrinks tank volume and physical footprint, cutting civil construction costs and enabling modular or skid-mounted deployment.

Sludge you can actually handle. Produces a thickened sludge blanket at typically 3–6% dry solids, reducing downstream sludge handling volume and cost.

Chemistry that works with it. Combined with coagulants and flocculants, the system destabilizes and aggregates stable emulsions and fine particles for optimal, consistent treatment results.

Tuned to your load. Air-to-solids ratio, recycle rate, and chemical dosing can all be precisely adjusted to handle variable influent loads and hit target effluent quality.

Who It's For

Food and beverage processing — slaughterhouses, dairies, breweries, and vegetable processing plants treating wastewater high in fats, oils, grease, proteins, and organic solids.

Industrial manufacturing — petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and chemical plants dealing with emulsified oils, dispersed solids, and certain dissolved organics.

Pulp and paper industry — removal of fines, fillers, and residual inks in process water recovery and effluent treatment.

Biological treatment support — as pre-treatment to cut high organic loads before biological systems, or as a post-treatment polishing step to strip remaining biosolids.

Algae and biomass harvesting — specialized separation and concentration of microalgae and other lightweight biological materials.

Packaged for Performance

Our DAF systems are engineered for reliability and performance. We deliver complete packaged solutions — chemical dosing systems, sludge conditioning, and advanced control panels included. Each unit is sized and configured from a detailed analysis of your specific wastewater characteristics and treatment goals.

For wastewater streams laden with suspended solids, emulsified oils, or other challenging contaminants, our DAF technology provides a robust, proven separation answer. Contact our engineering team for a comprehensive review of your application and a detailed performance evaluation.
